Shoemaking

Fall 2022 RISD Shoemaking course

This was my first experience of making shoes. I've gone from making traditional Spectator shoes to exploring shoes with interesting function.

Spectator Shoe

Spectator Shoe

The shoes are made entirely of natural grain cowhide Leather, except the insole, outsole, and heel are made of vegetable-tanned leather. I started by making patterns and then cutting leather shapes and medallions, and broguing with a laser cutter. But to be honest, the material I chose is not suitable for a spectator shoe because it is too easy to stretch and the upper becomes very wrinkled.

Based on the spectator shoe pattern, I started exploring different materials: Vinyl + Leather.

Shoe As An Olfactory Interface

I built a pressure sensor into the sole of the shoe. In theory, when the user walks up to a certain pressure, the atomization plate on the surface of the shoe will work to make the smell spray out.
